CROSS COUNTRY SKIING & SPORT BACKGROUND:
Joel began cross country skiing when he was 11 years old and the town he moved to had ski trails! Although he boogied around the northern Alberta race circuit in junior high, it wasn’t until high school that Joel found his passion for racing and earned a scholarship to attend the University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus where he competed on the Viking’s Cross Country Ski Race Team. While in school, Joel found time to earn a B.Sc. in biology while training and racing full time.
Highlights & Coaching Experience:
Raced all over Canada (Whitehorse, Callahan Valley, Sovereign Lake, Kelowna, Grande Prairie, La Ronge, Pinnawa, Duntroon, and Mont Ste. Anne)
Participated in an international ski tour to Norway in 2009
In the winter of 2015, Joel travelled to Slovakia to wax skis for the Canadian team at World University Games
Joel was the head coach in St. Albert for two years and has also coached in Camrose and Edmonton
Coaching Devon Nordic Bears:
For everyday skiing, Joel recommends hitting the trails in Edmonton, St. Albert, Chickacoo, Devon, and the Strathcona Wilderness Centre. When he’s thinking about a little day-trip - Athabasca, Tawatinaw, and Camrose come to mind as great ski locations. When it comes to his favourite trails there’s a three-way tie between Athabasca, Fort McMurray, and Grande Prairie! During the non-ski season, Joel is an avid cyclist, mountain biker, swimmer, and runner. He looks forward to skiing with the Bears this winter!
